SUP Adventures in Moab, Utah for Spring Break

 In SUP Lifestyle

For Ambassador Kwin Morris, Spring Break means throwing all the toys in the camper and heading out West for paddle board and bike adventures.

Being a teacher, I have the luxury of a spring break and that always means a road trip to find adventure.

This year my fiancé, best friend and I, packed up the camper, dog, bikes, hiking shoes and for the first time ever, our Tahoe SUP inflatable paddle boards, the Alpine Explorer. With room restrictions, we could never take our regular hard boards on a  24 hour drive across the country.

Our sights were set on Moab Utah.  Home of the best hiking and mountain biking in southern Utah and also the mighty Colorado river.   With our campsite right on the river, it was perfect. We had a nice wide section right at out doorstep.

I have been to Moab a few times and had always wanted to try paddling this chunk of river. So, while pumping the boards up, a sense of excitement and nervousness set in.  The boards have a ton of storage, using the bungee cords on the front of the board, I was able to bring a dry bag with camera and a lunch to eat somewhere on the river.

I was using the 12 foot model of the Alpine Explorer, which was definitely stable enough to allow my big yellow lab to sit on front with me for some cruising around. The other two boards were the 11 foot Alpine Explorers.

There is 12 mile section of river with a little mix of whitewater and deep portions. A perfect setup for the day we did a down river run. We geared up and started down the river. The miles went by so quickly, taking in the striking scenery and even encountered some class III rapids.  The board did great in all the conditions.  With the TRUtrac™ fin system, the board tracked great and since the fins are not very deep, I was able to get through the day without snagging a rock in shallow spots. The inflatable material also creates a very durable paddle board.

The morning was capped off with eating our lunch on a beach in the red rock canyons.  These boards made the trip so fun and would not be able to have done it without the inflatable boards.  Awesome durability and perfect portability for traveling!

Now it’s time to drive home and prepare for a lake crossing with my students back in Michigan! They are doing an awareness paddle for the Stand Up for Great Lakes crossing of Lake Huron this summer
