The History of Tahoe SUP
How a lake, a paddle,
and a big idea launched an inland revolution.
Before Tahoe SUP was a brand, it was a daydream — born somewhere between the salty air of Laguna Beach and the alpine stillness of Donner Lake.
In 2006, Nate Brouwer was in Laguna on a business trip when he spotted a group of guys riding waves on stand-up paddleboards. It looked fun, but his mind didn't linger on the surf. He thought about the deep-blue lakes back home — what if paddleboards could be reimagined for flat water? For distance? For exploration?
By 2007, Nate had built and tested what would become the first touring paddleboard, gliding it across the glassy surface of Donner Lake. The design was longer, sleeker, and faster than anything meant for the surf, with a displacement hull that sliced the water clean. It was the proof-of-concept that would launch a revolution in inland paddling.
In 2008, Tahoe SUP was officially formed. Nate teamed up with Doug Erwin, Allison Wren, and local waterman Ernie Brassard to bring the vision to life. These weren't just adapted surfboards — they were purpose-built touring craft, designed from the keel up for lakes, rivers, and calm bays.
From the beginning, innovation was part of the DNA. In 2008, Nate registered one of the first inland touring SUP hulls in the U.S., and by 2016 he held a U.S. patent for thermoSUP™ — a thermoformed construction process that made boards lighter, stronger, and more consistent.

First Touring Prototype
Nate Brouwer designs and tests the first displacement-hull touring paddleboard on Donner Lake — sleeker, built specifically for flat-water efficiency.

The Beginning
Tahoe SUP formally launches on Lake Tahoe, proclaiming itself the original touring stand-up paddleboard. Vessel Hull Design DVH 0468 is registered for the Rubicon.
- 2009
Rubicon at REI
The thermoformed Rubicon enters REI stores — a major retail breakthrough for inland touring.
- 2010
National TV Debut
Tahoe SUP boards appear on Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan — Stella & Nala & Phoebe — showcasing paddleboarding as a lifestyle to millions.
- 2011
EXPLORE: Catalina
The first Explore Project premieres at the Catalina SUP Festival. A bamboo touring paddle is developed with Quickblade.
- 2012
EXPLORE: Klamath River
A 25-mile inland expedition on the Klamath, later featured in Standup Paddler Magazine.

thermoSUP™ Patented
U.S. Patent 9,248,889 B2 granted for thermoSUP™ construction — lighter, stronger, more consistent boards.

EXPLORE: Black Canyon
The EXPLORE TEAM paddles Arizona–Nevada's Black Canyon — desert waterways at their most cinematic.

Gear of the Year
The Tahoma 11' wins Outside Magazine's Gear of the Year, its Tri-Hull design celebrated for stability and glide.
